Thinking about buying a gym machine at home? Read this to find out the best home gym station to workout at home without spending for gym memberships.
The epitome of the home gym is a home gym itself. By this, I mean that a home gym station is what you will eventually want to buy once you have started to workout regularly. There are several great benefits about these exercise stations, including:
- You can do a lot of muscle-building workouts in a limited space
- There are a great variety of exercises you can do on it
- It’s more convenient than free weights where you have to add and remove weights
Of course, the downside is that these multi gyms can be quite expensive. Even though they’re compact, you still need some space in your workout room. With cost and space considerations, it’s best to find one that has the most parts for all you need – an “all in one” type.
To help you find a home gym station that’s right for you, here are 5 of the best machines:

1 – Weider Ultimate Body Works
The Weider Ultimate Body Works is an adjustable incline bench. You can adjust the angle of incline to increase the amount of weight resistance up to 50 lbs. It has a very compact design, which makes it great for a minimum workout space if you’re living in a small apartment.
You can do over 50 exercises with this piece of equipment. This machine is the most popular on our list because it is the poor man’s Total Gym. It is more affordable than the other brands, but can still provide a great workout. It relies on your body weight which is enough for most people (and you have the resistance bands too). The Weider is the best choice if you are looking to workout at home and save gym membership costs.
The common complain that customers have about the Weider is that it isn’t easy to store. The incline adjustment mechanism is hard to adjust and may injure your hands in the process. Some customers receive a product that is unstable and wobbly while other customers say their product is sturdy. That said, many people love this product because it is a cheap version of the Total Gym (that we review below).
- Affordable price
- Over 50 exercises
- Not easy to store
- Adjustment mechanism may be hard
2 – Bowflex PR1000 Home Gym
With the Bowflex PR1000 Home Gym, you can get over 30 strength exercises. You can use weights from 5 lbs up to 210 lbs for resistance. It comes with a horizontal bench and lat pull down, making it great for shaping your arms and chest. This is one of the many models available from Bowflex, so if you are looking for a more complete machine, you can check out their other models.
The challenges with this machine is that you may need more space than you think. The weights may feel too light for some people, but if you slow down your reps, you can get more resistance. You can also choose the higher PR3000 model from Bowflex if you want to add more weight.
With the Bowflex PR1000 Home Gym, you can get over 30 strength exercises. You can use weights from 5 lbs up to 210 lbs for resistance, although some users say it feels less than that. It comes with a horizontal bench and lat pull down, making it great for shaping your arms and chest. This machine one of the many models available from Bowflex, so if you are looking for a more complete machine, you can check out their other models.
The challenges with this machine is that you may need a big enough space. The weights may feel too light for some people, but if you slow down your reps, you can get more resistance. You can also choose the higher PR3000 model from Bowflex if you want to add more weight. Note that this machine is suited for cutting and toning muscles, not for bulking. If you want to train for bulking, training with free weights is what you need to do.
The Bowflex can handle up to 300 lbs max user weight. The common complaint about this machine is that not all rods are compatible to be used as resistance rods here. Some customers say that the rods don’t have a long lifetime and need to be replaced in six months or so. Still, many customers say they make noticeable improvements with their health and looks after using this device. One customer even lost 60 lbs of fat with the help of the Bowflex.
- Up to 210 lbs of resistance weight
- Handles up to 300 lbs of user weight
- More than 30 exercises
- Doesn’t work with all resistance rods
- Rods may need to be replaced in six months
3 – Total Gym XLS Trainer
The Total Gym XLS Trainer is a single glide board with several attachments. It can hold up to 400 lbs of weight, and you can do over 80 exercises with this machine. It’s great for rehabilitation (recovery from injury) because the gliding motion is easy on your joints. You can fold this trainer so it’s easy to store. It comes with complimentary DVDs for all beginner, intermediate and advanced fitness levels and a nutrition meal plan, so you get a complete education.
You need to pay attention to your workout room, especially the height. Make sure you have enough space to do the exercises, especially when you are extending your arms and legs. The price on this machine is expensive when compared to others we review, but it is a great ‘top of the line’ piece of equipment. You can often find deals occasionally on the official website at totalgymdirect.com.
- Holds up to 400 lbs of weight
- Over 80 exercises
- Price is expensive
- Customer support takes a long time
4 – Phoenix 99226 Power Pro Olympic Bench
The Phoenix 99226 Power Pro Olympic Bench is equipped with incline, decline and flat bench angles. It also has a built-in squat rack behind the bench. It means with this bench, you can do the most popular (and important) exercises in weight lifting: bench presses and squats. You can do a variety of exercises and work many muscle groups at once, making this bench a great value for the price.
One thing that makes this station jump out from the others is the lat pull bar option. Many customers are satisfied with the functionality of the lat pull bar. However, some users say the bench size is small and not suitable for people taller than 6 feet. Other users say that they used only a light amount of weight on the lat pull and it made the welding crack at the bottom.
When assembling the equipment, you must pay attention to the installation instructions, or you might feel the weights are uneven. All the parts are screw-in so if you want to change a setup, you have to unscrew and screw it in again. Though there are some complaints, the Phoenix Power Pro is still a good home gym to use.
- Good lat pull bar option
- Bench size may not be suitable
- Changing setups involve unscrewing and screwing
5 – Powerline BSG10X Home Gym
The Powerline BSG10X Home Gym is a good way to start since it ships to you almost fully assembled. You can get it up and ready in 30 minutes. The design is compact so you can fit it in your room without taking up much space (although it is still a large piece of equipment). The seat is adjustable so you can get proper positioning and smooth movement. The weight stack holds 160 lbs, which is challenging enough for most routines.
However, some customers complain that the cables on this device need to be replaced annually or risk breaking in the middle of exercise. You need to pay attention to the condition of your cables. On top of that, this machine is 80 inches tall. If you are going to put it into your basement, make sure you have a high enough ceiling.
The weight stack may feel too light for some of you, but you can get an extra 50 lb stack (for an additional price). The Powerline can give you a variety of exercises but it isn’t our top recommendation because the price is among the most expensive on our list.
- Weight stack holds 160 lbs
- Cables may need to be replaced annually
- Expensive price
Home Gym Buying Guide
A home gym is a considerable investment. Although there are some models that are inexpensive, other models can be quite expensive depending on your budget. When you want to add a home gym station to your home gym, you need to do your due diligence. Here are some tips to help you choose the right one if you want to buy a brand that we didn’t review above:
1. Variety of Exercises
Most people buy a home gym to get a variety of exercises. The big gym stations offer more exercises than the small ones but come at a price. When buying a home gym station, consider the variety that you’ll get from the device. It’s not always necessary that you choose the one that has the most exercises possible. Perhaps you need one that has many exercise options, or perhaps you need one that has less options but specific ones. It’s possible to get the exercises you need without going over the budget.
2. Footprint Size
Some of the models we review are quite large while others are compact. If you have a large room, you can go with a gym station that has a large size (and often a large variety of exercise options). If you have a small room, you can choose the models that have a small size to fit your situation.
Other than the width and length of the machine, you need to also consider the height. It includes not only the height of the machine but also how high you need to go when exercising. If you’re putting the equipment in a basement, make sure to visualize how much space you need before you commit to a big gym station.
A high price doesn’t always mean a high quality product. A low price doesn’t always mean that it’s a low quality product. The price for gym stations vary quite a bit to the point where a model is twice as expensive as a another model. In some cases, you can choose an affordable model to replace the expensive model and it’s a good enough solution. But be careful when you look at a cheap option because you may end up not liking it and buying an expensive one anyway.
Get your workouts done faster
What makes these home gyms popular with so many people is that you can change from one exercise to another with a breeze. You can get your workouts done faster, and it’s more fun and addictive to use (plus it gives your room a “professional” look and can certainly impress your guests). You save time when you use these machines, so you can spend more time with your family and still get a great workout without having to break the bank.
